Ashes back on free TV in 2013
The government has decreed that the Ashes should be restored to the Grade A list of showpiece events, meaning that it should be broadcast on free-to-air TV in 2013. This is great news for all those who aren’t funding Rupert Murdoch’s inheritance. But don’t expect this to go through without a fight from Sky, who have paid ECB for the rights to the 2013 series.
The ECB, with their usual longsightedness, had actually advised against this move on the basis that Sky’s money is worth more than an extra 6 million viewers on Channel 4.
