Captain Strauss leads by example again
A look at the highest run-scorers over the last 12 months or so reveals an interesting statistic – Andrew Strauss is second on the list of test run makers behind South Africa’s Graeme Smith. Kevin Pietersen is 3rd on the list. Strauss also has the most number of centuries (6) including his superb innings today.
To think it was only a year ago that we were questioning his test future – now he is captain, and statistically the best batsman in the team. For the last month we have been wondering how Strauss will perform when he takes on the captaincy of the one-day team, but on this evidence he should slot straight in at the top of the order.
With the West Indies bowling attack looking ineffectual, England will be looking to pile up a large total. They may learn from Antigua that time is of the essence in these situations. Several times in recent years, England have let slip matches due to scoring too slowly when they should have been looking to apply the pressure.
However, the result may ultimately be decided by the nature of the pitch – it would seem that runs are there for the taking, so a draw could be a likely result.
