Captaincy Jim, but not as we know it
John Buchanan’s latest epiphany, in his guise as coach of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, is to dilute the role of the captain and let it be shared amongst several players. Sourav Ganguly held the role previously, but went to great lengths to tell the world that he wasn’t upset without actually answering the question himself.
Frankly, I can only see this ending in tears. Who, for instance will be responsible for man-management? If this falls to the coaching staff, how will they pick up the pieces when the players come off the field under another new captain? Or will this become captaincy by committee?
Perhaps if a player feels that the current captain is not making the right calls, he can simply take over. Or maybe it’s to give everyone the chance to have a go (England seem to be operating on these lines already, so nothing new there).
Buchanan claims that
Whether Sourav is in the side in three weeks or four weeks time at this stage is irrelevant
And that
At the same stage we might be asking him to make some key decisions for us
Now, I may not be a Cricket Coaching Genius™ like Mr. Buchanan, but I know the sound of a bet being hedged when I hear it.
