Greedy batsmen

Why do they do it?  If you watched Luke Wright’s innings for Sussex against Diamond Eagles, you’ll know what I mean.

Opening the innings, he hits his first ball for six over long on.  In the third over he hits a six and then a four, both over mid-off again, who is immediately moved back to the boundary.

Next ball Wright, not content to use the fielding change to take a single, tries to slog across the line through mid wicket and is bowled.

I know that T20 is supposed to be all about boundaries, but this was the third over, and he’d just hit two boundaries anyway.  Why not take the single, rotate the strike and annoy the bowler?

Unless you’re Ross Taylor, attempting to hit every ball to the boundary is guaranteed to end in tears.  Even in T20 you need to think about keeping wickets in hand, and in the last few overs you start to think about clearing the ropes every ball.

Had Luke Wright set himself to play through the innings he, and Sussex, could have been set for a bigger total.  Is it was, wickets started to fall and they were restricted to 119/7.
