Malcolm: This guy should be history

Devon Malcolm has said what we are all thinking.  Steve Harmison has a bad attitude towards playing for England.  So much for the fast bowlers union.

How I’m reading it at the moment, it doesn’t matter to Harmison if he doesn’t play against West Indies or Australia because he’s still got a central contract. At the back of his mind he’s an England player

Personally, I think Devon might be on to something here.  If players can’t be bothered or are complacent in some way, they should not be selected.  Bearing in mind that Harmison has a test average of nearly 45 since he bowled “that” ball in Australia, it shouldn’t be too great a loss.

Of course, selectors being selectors, they will always say nice things and leave the “door ajar” just in case.  If Sir Alex Ferguson was lumbered with some of the complacency that England’s centrally contracted “superstars” display, he would be showing them the door and closing it behind them, not leaving it ajar should they happen to fancy wandering back in again at a time convenient to them.

Steve is now seeking personal talks with Devon Malcolm as soon as possible to find out where he stands:

I want to know what I need to be doing, and to that end I have invited Devon out to dinner, although I did warn him that I may or may not be on time.  Also that, owing to my not playing in the IPL, he’ll have to foot the bill

Hopefully, when the annual ECB Central Contracts Awards (hosted by Jonathan Ross) are announced later this year, there will be some drastic changes.
