Rashid in for Ashes?
I will comment on the World T20 tomorrow, but I have just come across two reports, from the Telegraph and Sky Sports suggesting that Adil Rashid is due to be included in England’s pre-pre-pre Ashes squad announced Monday. These are the squads for the England XI match against Warwickshire, and the England Lions against Warwickshire.
That two reports have emerged indicates a certain amount of insider-info and Rashid seems to have moved ahead of Monty Panesar in the pecking order, and I think this is no bad thing. Much as Monty has been a positive thing for England, recently he has been going backwards and needs to work on his game.
So here’s a tip for you: if Rashid plays against Warwickshire, but not for the Lions, expect to see him in the squad for Cardiff.
I would pick him. Much has been written about Australia’s weakness in spin, and the likelihood of the wicket at Cardiff turning but not much cop for the seamers. With a five-man bowling attack, a fourth seamer is usually a luxury on any pitch, whereas Rashid’s legspin could be a real wicket-taking weapon if he is used in a surprise capacity.
The team I would pick for Cardiff is this:
- Strauss
- Cook
- Bopara
- Pietersen
- Collingwood
- Prior
- Flintoff
- Broad
- Swann
- Rashid
- Anderson
The journos are still prattling on about one MP Vaughan, by the way. Give it up, guys, eveyone else did months ago.
