The Ashes: 1st test update
After Australia spent two days grinding England’s bowlers into the dust, England will have to perform a repeat of their first innings to get away from this match with a draw.
If the rain does not close in, they will be second favourites, and the Pietersen dismissal will likely be the key moment of the match. It is all very well to say “that is the way he plays” and that he will get out stupidly as a result sometimes, but he should have gone on to make a big score with the bowling at his mercy.
There will also be a lot of hand-wringing about England’s bowling and renewed calls for the return of Harmison. We have been here before, and we know the end result. Let’s not go there again.
Anyway, England have four sessions to bat, so time to dig in and get on with it. If they can secure a draw, then they will be able to take some confidence into the 2nd test next week. If they lose, it will be a long road this summer.
