The Ashes: The molehill that keeps on growing
Which one of you hypocrites called this hypocrite a hypocrite?
Seems to be the general theme doing the rounds in the media after the 1st Test. After the furore over England’s time wasting tactics (alleged time wasting, they still deny that was the reason) Ricky Ponting has been engaged with a war of words with anyone who’s anyone in Ashes scandals.
First it was the England camp, now it is the old England camp, with Duncan Fletcher giving and receiving in equal measure.
Now we need a snappy name for this scandal. The obvious “glovegate” has been doing the rounds. Then there is the slighty more relevant “gloveyline” which has been less popular. “Physiogate” is another courtesy of the Brisbane Courier Mail. All highly original, I’m sure we can agree. As yet, I can’t find any reference to “physioline” so maybe there is hope for us all.
Frankly it’s all nonsense. The amount of time actually wasted would have amounted to no more than a couple of minutes, hardly enough time to make a difference for Australia. The fact is, they failed to remove the last wicket in over ten overs, and Ricky Ponting had only himself to blame for his baffling bowling changes, bringing on Marcus North rather than Siddle or Hilfenhaus.
The one thing that can come out of this is the potential for England to get inside Ponting’s head in the same way they did in 2005. Patrick Kidd, of Line and Length, recommends launching “Operation Wind Up Ponting“. I’m not sure if he doesn’t do that to himself anyway.
