Where will Hoggard go?

With Hoggy being released by Yorkshire, there will be a queue of counties all jostling each other to sign him up for 2010.  Leicestershire have declared their interest, and now Kent have followed suit.  In truth, there are probably 14 others who would love to have an experienced former England seamer on their books, especially one who is only 32.

We’ve discounted Yorkshire, for obvious reasons, and Durham, who already have three England seamers of their own.  Otherwise, good seam bowlers are hard to come by, especially English ones.

Which leaves the following, as yet unanswered, questions:

  1. Who can afford him?
  2. Well, obviously Surrey, but who else?
  3. Will he be looking for division 1 cricket exclusively?
  4. Will Hoggard be prepared to move south of Watford Gap?
  5. Which county offers the best dog-walking terrain?

If the answer to questions 3 and 4 are yes, then Kent would be a good bet – newly promoted, well led, not Surrey.  The answer to question 1 will be the main stumbling block for a lot of counties, possibly Leicestershire included.  If question 5 is the most important for Hoggard, we can expect to see him playing for Scotland next season.
