Wisden Five hurt my brain

I wouldn’t argue with the selection of Claire Taylor, but…

Mark Boucher is also one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the year. According to editor Scyld Berry, he and Neil McKenzie were

the backbone of the South African side which defeated England last summer

Here are his stats for that series.  Yup, 138 runs at 27.60 with a highest score of 45 not out.  Here are his figures for the entire year in tests.  So at least he scored a century against Bangladesh.

James Anderson took 46 test wickets at 29.84.

Neil McKenzie was dropped as soon as 2009 swung by.  Graeme Smith told us it would be hard for him to come back at the age of 33.

Dale Benkenstein was 26th in the runs scorers list for the County Championship in 2008.

According to the Wisden section on Cricinfo, the major (but not only) criteria for selecting the five is excellence in the previous English summer.

I will be selecting an alternative five in an upcoming post.
