Yorkshire give Hoggy the boot
Matthew Hoggard has been released by Yorkshire without so much as an “ay-oop lad”. It would seem that Hoggy is among the first victims of the ECB’s new age-related incentive payments, as Yorkshire naturally resent having to actually pay his salary themselves. So much for 15 years of loyal service.
Yorkshire have a long and distinguished history of treating their loyal servants with all the respect accorded someone who soils themselves in the pub. Michael Vaughan, after announcing his retirement this summer, was not allowed a farewell game because the “hype” would not be in the interests of the team.
Whilst Hoggy won’t have much trouble finding a new county looking for a quality, experienced bowler, it does highlight the plight of the lesser known players who will suffer under this new system. If a player of the calibre of Hoggard can become a victim, what are the chances of a jobbing 27 year old who has never quite made it beyond steady county performances?
I can understand what the ECB is trying to do with this new scheme, but it won’t work if there are no senior pros at counties ready to pass on their experience to the newly funded younger players. So, well done there.
