Young talent did the trick this weekend
For those bemoaning the lack of young English talent coming through, particularly in the fast bowling department, here are a number of performances to take note of over the weekend:
Maurice Chambers
Born in Jamaica, plays for Essex and took 4 West Indian wickets for 62 runs as the tourists were bowled out for 146. Chambers has British Citizenship, and so is eligible for England. The ECB selected him as one of six young fast bowlers to attend a winter training camp in Florida. Another young Essex pace bowler, Mervyn Westfield, took 3-25 in the same innings.
Tim Bresnan
Took 4-35 against Sussex in the Friends Provident Trophy. Included in the 30-man squad for the World Twenty20, having already played internationals for England. Oh, and a certain MP Vaughan scored 82 in this match as well.
Ian Saxelby
Not quite 20, his Friends Provident debut for Gloucestershire brought figures of 4-31 as Surrey were hammered. A seam bowler who has appeared for England under-19s.
Liam Dawson
A left-arm spinner for Hampshire, took 4-48 and scored 35 in a victory over Leicestershire. Another under-19 regular, and has a first class century under his belt as well.
Matthew Boyce
Leicestershire are much-criticised for their legion of Kolpaks, but Boyce is one to watch. Despite defeat by Hampshire, Boyce top-scored with 80 opening the innings.
James Hildreth
Added an innings of 67 to an unbeaten triple century in the recent County Championship match at Taunton against Warwickshire. His Somerset captain Justin Langer rates him very highly.
Billy Godleman
82 from 85 balls against Scotland for Middlesex’s 20 year old opener. Outscored another 20 year old, Australian Philip Hughes.
Dan Redfern
Another opener, this time for Derbyshire, and only just 19. 53 from 59 balls kickstarted the successful run-chase against Glamorgan.
So, it’s not all doom and gloom then.
