An extraordinary 3rd day at Trent Bridge exploded into life with the Ian Bell “run out” that wasn’t. The incident sparked a furious debate about the spirit of cricket, but MS Dhoni’s decision to recall Bell was warmly applauded by a fractious crowd.

Jonathan Trott now averages 66.77 in tests after his double century against Sri Lanka at Cardiff. This is, to put it mildly, quite remarkable.

The news that Worcestershire have released Adrian Shankar from his contract after only 15 days has turned the division 1 strugglers from “point and laugh” candidates to something resembling a full-on laughing stock. It seems they didn’t bother to actually check whether he could play or not before sticking him in their 1st XI. Shane Warne’s final farewell hasn’t been quite the farewell we might have hoped for, certainly not as much as his retirement from Test cricket. Mostly, he’s been imbroiled in the row with Sanjay Dixit (no, me neither) which has cost him £50k after a BCCI disciplinary.

Potential is a wonderful thing, but it’s downside is that it often remains that when it ought to be morphing into “achievement”. Graham Napier is one such cricketer who has long been held to have potential without ever taking it to the top level. Today, he showed it again.

Lancashire have had a good day on the pitch and a very bad one off it.

Bangalore got utterly destroyed by Kings XI Punjab after an Australian onslaught that meant the game was effectively won after about 15 overs.
