The Ashes: Broad steals Freddie’s script

The stage was set for England’s all-rounder to take centre-stage, to win the Ashes with one final, devastating display before bowing out of Test cricket. That was Andrew Flintoff’s script for the Oval.

Today, Stuart Broad stole that script, crossed out Freddie’s name and wrote his own.

The Ashes: The kids are alright

If I had a pound for every time I’ve heard the phrase “an Ashes series is no time to try new players” I’d be following the cricket from a small island in the Pacific somewhere. Why is it that all-England (by which I mean our media, who speak the words that we don’t have the wit to think of for ourselves) are so convinced of this?

Will the IPL lead to a new Kolpak?

Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower will be pushing for a say in decisions about England’s contracted players appearing in the IPL. Much fuss is still being made over the injuries to KP and Flintoff in relation to their involvement in South Africa earlier this year.

The Ashes: Flimsy Aussie excuses

With Australia now trailing in the Ashes, the flimsy excuses have started to show their acne-ridden faces. First we had all the fuss over umpiring decisions and “dirty cheat” Andrew Strauss, and now Shane Watson reveals that it is all because Cricket Australia have imposed a sledging ban on the squad.

Ashes 2nd Test, day 5: Flintoff ends Lord’s record

Played 18, drawn 9, lost 9. This is England’s record against Australia at Lord’s from 1938 until this morning. Their last Ashes victory there, in 1934, was the only time England achieved the feat in the whole of the 20th Century.

Ashes 2nd Test, day 1: Strauss & Cook but not much more

At 198/0 halfway through this first day, England were dreaming of a mammoth score of the type they should have achieved at Cardiff. As it turned out, a dream was all it was, barring more tailend heroics on day 2.

An angry Punter

At one point in England’s desparate rear-guard yesterday evening, the 12th man appeared with a message for Anderson and Panesar. The next over, he appeared again with some replacement gloves for one of the batsman. Then, the physio appeared on the pitch.

Ashes 1st Test aftermath

As emotive as England’s late escape was yesterday, the team will be under no illusions – they were thoroughly outplayed. With the 2nd Test following just a few days behind, Strauss will need to regroup his team fast. Here are the areas that are of concern.

Gayle blown away by Strauss mind games

Strauss can pat himself on the back, knowing that the West Indies players are now distracted, wondering who their next captain will be, whether they will be the next captain, whether they agree or disagree with their captain and so on and so on.

England ready for Flower power

After three months of huffing and puffing, the ECB have given the role of Team Director to the man who was already in temporary charge. For all the nonsense of headhunting and shortlists, the appointment of Andy Flower does seem to be the right decision, at least on the face of it.
