The ICC decision to exclude the Associate Nations from the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand has been met with widespread condemnation and disbelief, and not just from the Irish. There have been many comments about how the decision is baffling and difficult to understand. I disagree. From my position as a professional cynic, I think the decision is remarkably easy to understand, if we look at it from the same viewpoint as the people who made it.

World Twenty20 preview

It’s only 10 months since the last edition, but I am strangely exited about this tournament in a way that it’s impossible to be about the IPL right now. The format is lean and snappy, the cricket will be competitive and it’s genuinely hard to call this one, although I am going to have a go.

Joyce, Morgan…Rankin?

You may have noticed the name of Boyd Rankin featuring in the recently announced England Performance Programme. Rankin has already played international cricket for Ireland, and could become the next of their players to be poached across the Irish Sea, after Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan. Understandably, Cricket Ireland are not best.

England beat Ireland (just)

England gave Ireland the narrow beating of their lives yesterday, winning by 3 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method. It took a debutant and a part-time spinner to make the game safe, but we should expect nothing less in an England 50-over match.
