Shane Warne’s final farewell hasn’t been quite the farewell we might have hoped for, certainly not as much as his retirement from Test cricket. Mostly, he’s been imbroiled in the row with Sanjay Dixit (no, me neither) which has cost him £50k after a BCCI disciplinary.

Cricket is a game played mostly in the mind. No amount of technique and panache can compensate for the mental frailties that have reigned so tyrannically over potential throughout the years. It is the psychology of fear that makes Test cricket great.

Shane Warne has a habit of saying things in the press that English cricket does not want to hear and that come back to bite us. Remember what he said about Ravi Bopara before the Ashes?
So when Warne writes in his Times column that England will ruin Stuart Broad we should start to worry. A lot.

Shane Warne has been up to his usual mind-games in the press again. This time Ravi Bopara is the victim, having his temperament questioned.

England finally, finally, won the Ashes in 2005. So earth-shattering was this victory that “proper” news was pushed off the front pages, people danced in the streets as if world peace had been achieved and even Paul Collingwood’s performance (17 runs, 1 catch, 4-0-17-0) was considered worthy of an MBE.

On 4th June 1993, Shane Warne changed the English cricketing mentality with that one delivery. Only, this summer, he won’t be here to scare England batsmen.
