Somerset are formidable again

To say that the start of the season was disappointing would be an understatement – for Somerset it was traumatic. Two county championship matches, two innings defeats, 50 all out whilst following on against Warwickshire. Not good. But, since then they’ve won six in a row and counting.

A message to the Champions League mockers

There is a certain class of English cricket enthusiast who will have barely registered that the Champions League was even taking place this past two weeks. If you are a member of this class, you would probably snort in derision at the idea that it is set to become one of the most important competitions in cricket.

Somerset get the benefit of Champions League

Do me a favour, and take a look out of the nearest window. There may well be a winged hog somewhere in the vicinity. Meanwhile, in the cricket world, a county chairman has been heard saying the things that Giles Clarke gets paid to sweep under the carpet: English cricket is as anachronistic as the crew of USS Enterprise strolling around the Wild West.

Resistance is futile

Craig Kieswetter has been touted as not only England’s next wicketkeeper-batsman, but also as the new Kevin Pietersen. He qualifies for England in February and is eager to earn the abuse of South Africans everywhere.

Somerset bow out

Somerset hoped to take advantage of Kieron Pollard-inflicted shell-shock when they played NSW Blues. They didn’t want a backlash, and in the end got neither. Instead they gave it away with careless batting early on, and got creamed as a result.

Somerset almost done

There was nothing very remarkable about Somerset’s loss to Diamond Eagles today, except perhaps the bowling of CJ de Villiers again. Trescothick had returned home, but his replacement Wes Durston top scored with 57 from 32 balls, the highest innings by an Englishman in the tournament so far.

Trescothick forced home from Champions League

Poor Tres. He had been much praised for his efforts in even reaching India to take part in the Champions League Twenty20 for Somerset. Now he has been forced to return home after a recurrence of his stress related illness.

T&T beat Deccan, Somerset squeak through

Deccan Chargers were the champions of the 2nd IPL season. But they have never won a game at their home stadium. Now they have been defeated by the West Indian T20 champions, Trinidad & Tobago as well as the English runners up Somerset.

Somerset’s perfectly paced innings

They lost their tenth wicket off the final ball. It takes a lot of hard work and planning to achieve such perfection in an innings. Somerset were hoping to qualify for the Super 8 by beating Trinidad & Tobago. Instead their net run rate took an antelope-in-the-lion-enclosure type mauling, and they’ll need a favour to get through.

Somerset refuse to play nicely

Lalit Modi had probably never heard of Alfonso Thomas before tonight. Now that the IPL teams are 0-3 in the Champions League he certainly has.
